Dismissive avoidant attachment style (sometimes referred to as avoidant dismissive attachment style) is one of the three insecure attachment styles – the other two are anxious attachment style (also called anxious-preoccupied) and fearful avoidant attachment style. These adult attachment styles are formed in early childhood, and reflect in how we deal with emotional intimacy in intimate relationships as adults. People with an insecure attachment style experienced some kind of disconnect with a primary caregiver (or both) as kids. Dismissive avoidants grew up with avoidant adults, or adults that couldn't provide the emotional intimacy they needed. This could be subtle, such as a lack of emotional intelligence in one or both caregivers leading to emotional distance, or more severe such as abusive behavior. The subconscious pattern that formed during child development in a person with a dismissive avoidant attachment style is: when I seek support, I will be rejected. Dismissive avoidant people learned that self-reliance is safer than emotional vulnerability and seeking support from a caregiver. They experience close relationships as something more negative than positive, which naturally makes it challenging to be fully present in adult relationships – let alone commit to lasting romantic relationships. It can feel more comfortable to be in casual relationships or less meaningful connections – but this defense mechanism that often doesn't lead to long-term fulfillment. Luckily, like all insecure attachment styles, a dismissive avoidant attachment can be reprogrammed into a more secure attachment style – something you'll learn in this course!
